How to Add Picture Frame Moulding (the easy way)
Add picture frame moulding to an entire room or just one wall with this simple tutorial
If you give a DIY-er a blank wall she’s going to add moulding… it’s science.
Our home office makeover is underway and we are almost to the finish line!
One of the final projects for the space though was making this blank wall extra special.
I have been wanting to try picture frame style moulding for a while now and this seemed like the perfect spot.
I will be 100% honest with you, I thought this was going to be slightly tricky, but it was probably one of the easiest DIY’s I have ever done!
Let me show you some tricks we used to get this wall done in just over 2 hours.

DIY Picture Frame Molding

Start by painting the wall in your chosen color, it is much easier to paint it without the moulding on it.

After the paint is dry add the divider moulding piece.
The rule of thumb is that this piece should be placed at 1/3 of the wall.
So for instance our ceilings are 8′ heigh, so our piece was attached 32″ up from the floor.
The moulding is attached with wood glue and finishing nails.

Next I added the two side pieces of the bottom picture frame.
The trick is to cut scrap pieces of wood to use as spacers.
We used one spacer on the bottom cut at 4″ and one for the side cut at 4″.
Make sure to use a level before securing anything to the wall.

Cut the top and bottom pieces to fit in-between the side pieces and attach.
For the top frame we used the same steps, starting with the side pieces.

The top and bottom frames went up so quickly I couldn’t stop there.

I started adding a frame inside the top frame, instead of just doing another plain frame though, I got a little fancy.

I added two more pieces to of moulding to create some cool dimension on the second frame.

You can also buy corner pieces if you aren’t super confident in your miter cut ability.

After all the moulding was hung I filled all the nail holes with wood filler and caulked all the seams.
I finished by painting the moulding the same Poetry Plum as the wall.
Picture Frame Moulding Accent Wall

I am in deep love with how this picture frame moulding accent wall turned out!
It was exactly the oomph that this space needed.
Now that it’s done though I am considering adding wallpaper to the inside frame, something vintage.
What do you think?
The rest of the office should be complete in the next week or two & I can’t wait to share the final reveal with you!
